'Grow your own' in the comfort of your own garden......

toptwig

Summer of course is THE time for the home gardener to grow their own produce at home. One of my customers is able to do just that now their two Woodblocx raised planters are installed, up and running.

The groundwork for this particular project began late last Autumn when I was first approached. The customer wanted a stretch of mature ornamental border to be cleared of trees and shrubs. In the photographs below you can see the border as it originally was. Next I needed to clear as much of the existing roots as possible and level the ground ready for the delivery of the planters as self-assembly 'kits'.

For those interested in the Woodblocx system their website can be found here: https://www.woodblocx.co.uk. In their promotional videos Woodlblocx explain that the construction of these kits is simplicity itself. In practise the customer and I worked on this jointly and found it rather more challenging than the videos would have you believe! Once the wooden sides were built a plastic sheet lines the inner face of the planter to keep the wet soil away from the timber sides thereby extending the latter's life!

At my suggestion we created a path around each of the planters using high load 'gravel grids' placed onto a landscaping fabric. The individual cells of the gravel grids could be filled with aggregate such as gravel though the customer chose bark clippings in this case. I know from my own bitter experience that a wet, greasy compacted area of coil around a raised veg. bed soon become full of weeds and unpleasant to use - hence the path. The soil in this instance was ordered by the customer in 'bulk bags'. My contribution was to barrow it all around from the front drive to the empty planters in the back garden and fill 'em up!

Once my part in proceedings was over the customer sowed their crops in the Spring and they have been carefully tended ever since!

The customer appears to be very happy with this project and they have kept me on as their gardener since.
